About Mindy
Hi, my name is Mindy Isabelle, I am the sole proprietor of this barbershop. The Barbershop has been women owned since 1974, founded by Mrs Vivian Maxon. We are located in north Amherst, aka: the “dirty hands” district, made up of a small community of working class people who were (somewhat) accepting of the diverse community growing around them.
I grew up in my great grandparents house a mile away. My brother and I would come and wait forever for his haircut, enjoying the toys and the banter!
The Barbershop was always filled with interesting people, a strong scent of Bay Rum and a solid sense of community. The often opinionated customers held forth with endearing wit.
The furniture was antique and the mirror was so large everyone could be seen. When Vivian visited her home, in Sweden, I learned to cut my brother hair and eventually earn the trust of his friends and cut their hair too (for $3!).
Can you see where the story is going?
Mrs Maxon was ready to retire in 2001 and found me cutting hair at the Amherst Barbershop where I had worked for 6 years. Then, with a hand-shake deal, I bought Mrs Maxon’s shop and have been here for almost 20 years now. I am proud to serve the community I grew up in and have kept the Barbershop just as I remember it. You will still find comfortable atmosphere, amazing people, great conversations and a strong community “scent” here – not to mention a great haircut.
